Indeed, at the time, clean-ups were prioritized over preventive measures in an effort to employ the existing waste disposal industry rather than to rethink the whole oilfield process again and identify environmental control techniques.
The progress has been demonstrated by various indicators as follows [1–3]: Since 1970, emissions of six principal pollutants (nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulfur dioxide, particulates, carbon monoxide, and lead) decreased by 25 %.
