There are, of course, many complexities that deserve exploration. There is one issue in particular, however, that must be broached if this sketch is to represent what I hope is an adequate overview of Peirce's philosophy as a whole.
Thus, a method that would be essentially a demand for self-consistency would still need to be applied to experiential consequences — it would be tied to experimental results, at least in a loose sense of experiment in the context of commonsense attempts to settle opinion. The application of a self-consistent method would need to invoke natural inclination, "the light of reason," or, to use another term of Peirce, "taste," in order to determine the appropriateness of the application. This same point can be applied to the methods of tenacity and authority, which sustain selfconsistency until compelling contingencies challenge them.
Because of the resistance encountered in phenomena independently of being interpreted, Peirce refers to Secondness as something brute. Secondness is illustrated each moment when we encounter resistance to our will and each time we discriminate differences among things; yet Secondness is prior to the intelligibility of these discriminations. The idea that phenomena are brute with respect to their Secondness calls attention to Peirce's view that the first two categories are not in themselves categories of intelligibility.
