BRITISH SOCIAL ATIITUDES 22 Appendix Cohorts In order to untangle the role of generational, life-cycle and period factors in explaining age differences in attitudes we have divided our sample into a number of 'cohorts', defined by when they were born. These cohorts, and some of their key characteristics, are shown below: • • • • • • • • Born between 1 974 and 1 98 1 , and teenagers during the 1 990s. In 1 999 in their teens and early 20s, and in education or entering the labour market. Born between 1 966 and 1 973, and teenagers during the 1 980s.

The higher the person' s score, the more in favour - or accepting - of rationing they are, and the lower the score, the less in favour (more details of our scale are in the appendix to this chapter). Of course, any scale is only as reliable as the questions within it.
