There have been numerous brittle fracture incidents. The 1988 failure is only the most recent, well·publicized one. For brittle fracture to occur, there must be the simultaneous occurrence of three factors: • A steel that is notch-brittle at some designated temperature • A notch or geometric discontinuity that causes high local stresses • A stress at the notch 78 Chapter Three The absence of any of these factors greatly reduces the probability of brittle fracture . , As material properties, brittleness is the opposite of toughness.
If a plot is made measuring absorbed energy versus test temperature, a curve like the one shown in Fig. 5 results. This shows that at lower temperatures the notch toughness of a material is reduced, because less energy is absorbed up to the point of specimen fracture. It may, therefore, be subject to brittle fractures at lower service temperatures. The transition temperature is defined as the temperature at which the fracture changes from predominantly ductile to brittle. Ductile failure has a dull appearance and occurs by shear failure.
When the toughness of A36 is insufficient, then a modified A36 (specified in API 650) may be used. The modified A36 requires that the . 2 percent. The A283C is also widely used for water storage and petroleum plates, but A36 has generally become the steel of choice for tanks under Yo in thick. The A283C has a lower allowable stress and therefore may be less economical when required thicknesses are taken into consideration. The A131B is a common choice where improved toughness is required in thinner plate.
