There were stickers in a hundred colors, butterﬂies, ﬂowers slick as a rainbow, and big bonbons with a surprise inside their sweet chocolate shells. The world was glutted with secrets. Written into the blue walls were elves, water nymphs, slender and skittish, hampers, baskets, naughty gnomes, and spirits that hid in the corners of the room. Every day, my God, was too rich to fathom.
This came as a complete surprise, since no one had asked their permission to print the poems, but they were happy to see it through. They never learned who read these poems or how they were received; the collection was titled Spiew Introduction xxxiv Za Drutami (Song behind barbed wire) and included the statement that prefaces this volume. In 1999 a Hebrew edition of the poems was published. Felicja Karay, a campmate of the Karmels, enlisted the aid of Ruth Stern, who translated many of the 180 pages.
